Since
the election of the Government there are an extra 6.55 uniformed
police serving the Melbourne electorate, increasing uniformed
police numbers from 378.32 to 384.87. That’s a 1% increase in the
number of uniformed police, with additional police at Flemington
& Fitzroy police stations.
In
addition to police patrols, we have police who specialise in the
investigation of sexual assaults, burglaries, car theft and
robberies. There are police who work with young people and police
who enforce our traffic laws. There are police who work with the
community to prevent crime and family violence, and police who
support Neighbourhood Watch.
We have
also invested in Policing infrastructure including the following
local initiatives:
- The
Carlton/North Melbourne Police Station is being replaced at a cost
of $8,000,000.
And
this investment is seeing results with crime rates going down in
the local Government areas that cover Melbourne:
- Since
2000/01 the crime rate in the City of Yarra has fallen by
26.4%.
- Since
2000/01 the crime rate in the City of Moonee Valley has fallen by
18.5%.
- Since
2000/01 the crime rate in the City of Melbourne has fallen by
48.1%.
