hOUSEHOLDS IN MELBOURNE HELP BEAT TARGET 155

Households in Melbourne are using less water than at the same time last year the latest figures reveal.

Member for Melbourne, Bronwyn Pike MP, said the latest figures revealing a drop in water use had helped Melbourne to avoid going onto harsher water restrictions.

“Melbourne households are to be congratulated for their water saving efforts and are encouraged to keep up the good work,” Ms Pike said.

“The latest figures show that household water consumption has fallen against figures for the same period last year, which has helped Melbourne avoid harsher water restrictions.”

The Brumby Government’s Target 155 campaign has urged Melbourne water users to keep their personal water use to below 155 litres per person per day.

Melbourne has stayed below the Target since it was introduced just over twelve months ago.

“In the year since the Target 155 campaign started, Melbourne has saved over 16 billion litres of water which meant we didn’t have to go to harsher water restrictions.

“This is a fantastic effort and we need to keep up these water saving behaviours.”

Ms Pike said the current Stage 3a water restrictions are staying in place over summer to ensure water security.

“The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting this summer will be hotter and drier than usual and in this context it is extra important that all of us keep a close watch on our personal water use.” Ms Pike said.

Ms Pike said that one way to save water is by installing a water saving product at home – many of which are eligible for a Brumby Government rebate.

“The Brumby Government offers a wide range of rebates through the Water Smart Gardens and Homes Rebate scheme to help people maintain their gardens and lifestyles and achieve the Target of using less than 155 litres per person per day.

“By choosing to install water efficient products like water saving shower heads, greywater systems, dual flush toilets and water tanks in and around the home, households are reducing their water use.
