DOCKLANDS PLANNING CONTROLS TO BE SHARED WITH COUNCIL

Planning Minister Justin Madden today announced the City of Melbourne would become the responsible authority for developed areas of the Docklands.

Under the new arrangements, the City of Melbourne will become the planning decision maker for developed areas – including parts of Harbour Town, Digital Harbour, Victoria Harbour, Waterfront City, Batman’s Hill, Yarra’s Edge and the Stadium Precinct.

The Victorian Government through VicUrban will continue to be the authority for the remaining undeveloped areas and continue to lead the further strategic development of Docklands.

“Docklands is now ten years old, and the first half of it has developed into a thriving business and residential community,” Mr Madden said.

“Around 3400 dwellings have been constructed so that six thousand residents now call Docklands home and 19,000 people travel there each day to work.

“The time is right for the City of Melbourne to shape the planning future of this important piece of Melbourne.”

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said he was delighted Council would have planning authority for developed areas of Melbourne’s Docklands.

“This decision strengthens the genuine partnership formed between the State Government and the City of Melbourne to ensure the best future planning outcomes for our city,” Mr Doyle said.

“Our partnership with the Brumby Government will benefit not only those who live and work in Docklands, but all visitors to our waterfront.”

Mr Madden said today’s move continued to strengthen the planning partnership between the Victorian Government and the City of Melbourne.

“We have been working together on a range of planning matters in the municipality, including the new advisory committee to assess major developments,” he said.

“Today’s announcement builds on that partnership and further highlights our desire to plan collaboratively and achieve a shared vision for Docklands and Melbourne City.

“VicUrban will still play a lead role in master planning development in the Docklands area however there is an enhanced commitment to working with the City of Melbourne in planning the expansion of this new community.”

Mr Madden said the first decade of Docklands had been an incredible success.

“Six billion dollars worth of investment, 98 per cent of the developable land contracted to private developers, and the relocation of 40 major corporates to the area have all been achieved in this first ten years,” he said.

“We look forward to working together to make the next decade even more successful.”
